Kopuznâme
An ink-drawn roguelike deckbuilder from the Turkic epics. Ride the steppe road.
A kopuz is struck, and the epic begins.
Maker's note
I made it for two reasons. The first is technical. Every piece of art in a game — ninety-three cards, thirty enemies, the relics, the event screens — has to look like it came from one hand, and after the seventy-eight cards of Arkana I wanted to take that a step further. The ink-drawn look is the result: the narrower you keep the technique, the cheaper consistency becomes.
The second reason is not technical. Most people know Dede Korkut, Manas and the Oğuznâme by name rather than from the inside. The text on the cards is written in the language of the epics, and finishing the game opens the twenty-six pages of the codex: Beyrek's bloodied shirt, Almambet's blood-brotherhood, Oğuz's world-spanning arrow. The game is partly an excuse for that.
The two reasons turned out to be the same one: if the words on a card come from an epic, the picture on it has to come from the same place.
What it does
Four epics, four ways to play
- Bamsı Beyrek, Vengeance: fury builds as he takes hits, then empties into a single blow
- Manas, Forty Chora: he calls warriors to his side and the bigger the band the stronger you are
- Oğuz Kağan, Quiver and Arrows: hoard them, then loose them all at once
- Selcan Hatun, Agility: her resource is also her shield
What waits on the road
- 93 cards, every one upgradable and written in the language of the epics
- 22 relics, permanent gifts that reshape a run
- 26 kut, the starting path you choose before you ride out
- 30 enemies, each showing its intent above its head
- 10 potions, mythological events, campfires, treasure and markets
- 3 acts: the steppe road, the ancient lands, and Erlik Han's realm of death
It doesn't end when it ends
Ten ascension tiers make the game harder one notch at a time, and eighteen achievements unlock along the way. Winning opens the twenty-six pages of the Epics codex: the real legends behind the cards, Beyrek's bloodied shirt, Almambet's blood-brotherhood, Oğuz's world-spanning arrow.
