Maker's note

If Arkana was a test of the picture side, KOZ was a test of the sound. What I wanted to know this time was how far local generation of audio and music would go: table sounds, card sounds, a piece of music for every theme.

Most of what I tried was thrown out. Different styles, different effects, a pile of visual-effect experiments that never made it into the game. The throwing out turned out to be the instructive part: understanding why a sound does not hold up in play teaches you more than making the next one. What is left behind is a library I can reuse.

That is why the game ships with nine table themes and thirteen decks. Each has its own colour, its own typeface and its own music, and all of them are what survived the cut.

What it does

The hands won't carry you, the crew will

You play classic poker hands to beat a target score. The real work is assembling a crew that multiplies what you score: with the right crew, a single hand snowballs.

Pick up to five cards from your hand, play them or throw them away
Pair, trips, flush, full house; every hand carries its own chips and multiplier
The crew triggers left to right, and the sequence changes the result
Between blinds, visit the shop: new crew, trick cards, upgrades, extra slots
Alchemy reshapes the deck itself: gild a card, load it with chips, burn it out

The climb

Eight antes, each with a small blind, a big blind and a boss. Every boss bends the rules: a suit scores nothing, face cards are debuffed, your hand shrinks. Eight stakes, each more merciless than the last.
